PRESS
RELEASE OF THE CIIA
March

_________
CIIA proposes setting up 2 food price
indexes
The current food
price index
published by FAO
is
too
general and is not operational
for
good
global food governance.
CIIA proposes to
complement
the
overall
index published monthly
by
two
warning indexes:
- an
indicator
on the prices of food
for urban
poor
people (Price Index
for
feeding Urban Poor PIFUP). It should take
into account the
urbanization
rate and the degree of
income
dispersion in
each
country;
-
a
second
indicator
integrating
the
rate
of
dependence on imports
of
agricultural
commodities and the
average over cost of the supply chain
(supply chain dependency
food
price
index-DI). It would
allow evaluating the
potential
repercussions
of
excessive
price volatility international
and / or a
regional
natural
disaster.
